What’s the deal with catalytic converters?

Author: Cory Walpole

Catalytic converters—often called “cats”—are a crucial part of a vehicle’s exhaust system.

Their primary function is to reduce harmful emissions from gasoline and diesel engines. Diesel vehicles have their own versions, known as the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Looking to recycle your catalytic converter in Manitoba? We’ve put together a simple guide to help you navigate the process!

Why recycle your catalytic converter?

If you’re replacing your exhaust system and have an old catalytic converter, don’t let it collect dust in your garage or toss it in the trash. Instead, bring it to Urbanmine for recycling and get some cash in return!

Catalytic converters contain valuable precious metals—platinum, palladium, and rhodium—held in a ceramic honeycomb or stainless-steel foil. These metals are rare and highly valuable, making their recycling essential for both economic and environmental reasons.

How to recycle your catalytic converter in Manitoba

Here’s a quick guide on what to do before bringing in your catalytic converter for recycling.

1. Cut off the pipe

Ensure the converter is removed from the exhaust pipe. This allows us to inspect the unit properly and makes it easier to handle.

Pro tip: Bring the pipe and any remaining parts of the exhaust system—we’ll purchase the steel too!

2. Check that it’s full

Look inside—do you see the ceramic honeycomb or foil material? If so, great!

If you can see straight through to the other end, the valuable material may have broken off or blown out. Or, you may be looking at the wrong part, like a muffler or resonator.

3. Don’t remove the heat shield

The heat shield is sometimes more recognizable than the converter itself and may have the code stamped on it.

In some cases, the heat shield may conceal the code. To be safe, keep the heat shield attached. If necessary, we’ll remove it at the shop.

4. Bring your ID and required information

To comply with Manitoba’s Scrap Metal Act, our team needs the following information for every purchase:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • The licence plate number of the vehicle you arrived in
  • A brief description of how you obtained the catalytic converter and any other scrap

Optional but helpful: You can also bring the vehicle’s registration (for the car from which the catalytic converter was removed) or a receipt for the exhaust work. We’ll take a photo and attach it to your purchase ticket while you keep the original.

How much is your catalytic converter worth?

The value of a catalytic converter can range from a few dollars to several hundred, depending on its type. Since there are many variations, each converter must be graded individually. We’re unable to provide estimates based on your vehicle’s year, make, or model.

Want an idea of what yours is worth before coming in? Here’s how:

Find the code

Many converters have a code stamped on them. If you locate this number, call our office at 204-774-0192 and speak to a grader for a quote.

Some makes, like Honda and Acura, may be quoted based on high-quality photos.

The easiest and most accurate way to determine your converter’s value is to bring it in for assessment. Some codes are difficult to find, but our expert graders know where to look. Plus, we have a network of resources to assist with tricky identifications!
